At present, the majority of fisheries are monitored and regulated in areas which are delineated by arbitrary ICES boundaries which do not necessarily have logical or consistent relationships with biological processes or fish movements. The biogeographical identification of Channel stocks is, therefore, an important step towards developing a rational strategy for the management of their fisheries. This synthesis is based on the wide available knowledge which has not been yet entirely exploited with the purpose of stock identification, for 25 commercially important species in the Channel. In addition, principal technics for stock identification are reviewed likewise environmental characteristics of the Channel, which represent fundamental components in... |

The environmental impact of a brown trout farm located in the Grande Rade de Cherbourg (Normandy) is reported. During observations the fish stock evolved within the range of 140 to 350 metric tons. Farm influence was researched on water column through hydrochemistry, phytoplankton, faecal bacteria and, on bottom, through grain size, organic matter, metals, macrobenthos. This report only deals with water column. Except ammonia, no hydrological parameter seems to be affected, even near to the net pens. Phytoplankton and coliform bacteria were not altered. An extra concentration of ammonia was detected at some tens meters from the raft, with favourable conditions. But generally it was impossible to observe it unless close to the farming structure, downward... |

From Normandy to Belgium bordary, the coastal fishery became during the ten last years a significant social and economic actor, which mostly lives by predominant exploitation of eastern Channel. Recently discovering a situation of resource overexploitation and a difficult cohabitation between "métiers", these coastal fleets are in the heart of various preoccupations of managment at regional, national and european levels. Since 1985, a coordinated programme including Boulogne and Ouistreham allowed to progress in the knowledge of complex fisheries through: improvement of statistics, characterisation of coastal fleets and their activity, assessment of the knowledge on the resources. This synthesis describes, for 1987-88, the quality of the regional landings... |

The detailed structure and composition of turbiditic channel-mouth lobes is still largely unknown because they commonly lie at abyssal water depths, are very thin and are therefore beyond the resolution of hull-mound acoustic tools. The morphology, structure and composition of the Congo turbiditic channel-mouth lobe complex (90×40 km; 2525 km2) were investigated with hull-mounted swath bathymetry, air gun seismics, 3.5 kHz sub-bottom profiler, sediment piston cores and also with high-resolution multibeam bathymetry and video acquired with a Remote Operating Vehicle (ROV). The lobe complex lies 760 km off the Congo River mouth in the Angola abyssal plain between 4740 and 5030 m deep. It is active and is fed by turbidity currents that deposit several... |

The maritime fisheries and mariculture guidance law passed in 1997 specifies that with the perspective of renegotiation of the common fisheries policy in 2002, a report on the special conditions of inshore fisheries be drawn up by the Government. To do so, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries entrusted this task to three experts, who are the authors of this report. In accordance with their remit, the situation of fisheries in territorial waters and estuaries of metropolitan France and the four DOM overseas departments ( counties) was examined, in the framework of meetings with professional fishermen, administrations, elected officials and scientific organisations. The first part situates fishing activities in coastal areas within the overall context... |

This summary of the French fisheries of the North Sea/English Channel/Atlantic for the year 2000 is done in the context of the programme "Halieutic Information Systems" that has as its goal the creation of a permanent and operational observatory of fishing. It brings together several types of data: statistical data of administrative origin, data from the IFREMER pollsters network, economic data and data acquired during sea campaigns. This first annual summary of French fisheries, meant for all actors in the fishing industry (from research to professionals and managers) and the general public, is limited to the Atlantic coast. The first part of this document contains an overall description of the English Channel Atlantic fleet, that is, all trades included.... |

The document synthesizes the data collected in 2002 and 2003 as part of the Fisheries monitoring system of Ifremer. It updates the description of the status in 2000 of the French fishing fleets operating in the North Sea, Channel and Atlantic (produced in 2002). The document is made of a series of leaflets. The first leaflet provides a global description of the overall population of fishing vessels. Information provided includes vessel and crew characteristics, spatial distribution of fishing activity and catch, and gears used. A description of fleets (sub-groups of vessels using the same gear combinations) is also provided at both national and regional levels. The following leaflets provide a detailed description of the fishing activity and economic... |
